Scott & Claire Oppliger

Organization:

Athletes in Action     https://athletesinaction.org/

Where do you work?

Claire and I work for Athletes in Action (AIA), a ministry of Cru (formerly Campus Crusade for Christ). We live in Denver but the scope of our ministry is national and at time international.

Describe what you do.

We both focus on leadership development for the 500+ Athletes in Action staff in the US and around the world. We create tools, resources, and processes for our staff to help them grow in their individual spiritual, emotional, relational lives and in their ability to carry out a fruitful ministry of evangelism and discipleship.

Why did you choose your ministry? What led you to that ministry?

After a few years with the Campus Ministry of Cru and after Scott had completed a Masters of Divinity seminary degree, we were asked to consider ministering to professional athletes in the New York City area. We accepted that call and began our ministry with Athletes in Action. We continue to see how God uses the platform of sports draw people to himself.

When did you make the decision to serve in missions - how old were you?

We both committed our lives to Christ while in college and also decided we would pursue full-time ministry after college.

Why did you decide on serving in this way? Why missions?

We were both motivated to see others come to Christ and see their lives change like we did. We experienced that life change in college, so we wanted to help college students know Christ and follow and serve Christ.

Hobbies or other interests?

We enjoy reading, skiing the mountains of Colorado, tennis and cooking.

Your favorite sport? Favorite team?

We have become Broncos fans, but probably like watching college football more than other sports. We lived in Ohio for a number of years and two of our children graduated from Ohio State, so our favorite team: the Buckeyes! A close second for Scott are the Cornhuskers of Nebraska, as he grew up on a farm there and went to undergrad at the University of Nebraska.

Both of us went into missions straight out of college, so no other occupations.
